the quiet blog.

I have not been blogging regularly for a long time. I used to use this space to share funny little stories from my life, share pictures, recap my week and rant about my pet peeves. All of this started seeming really ridiculous and insignificant last Fall - when we found out my dad's cancer was back.

In November 2010, five days after John and I were engaged, Dad found out he had Kidney Cancer.  Just days later we all found ourselves taking up over half of the seats in the surgical waiting room at St. Lukes as we waited for a kidney to be removed. We actually chose our wedding date that day. With all of the family in one place, we were able to compare calendars and make a decision. We looked at wedding venues online, listened to ipods, and I spell-checked a bad ass email my aunt was planning to send to her newly ex-employer. We also set up her new email address (since she didn't have a personal one), and we debated the spelling of her middle name. (Who doesn't know how to spell their middle name?!?!?) It was a crazy day, full of strange conversations and weird exchanges. But, in the end, we were so happy to hear that the surgery went well. We were cancer free.

On October 1, 2011, I married John. It was a beautiful day with overwhelming love and joy. No one could have told me how happy the day would be or how it would stay with me for weeks - like I was high on life.

A couple weeks later - before pictures were in, before thank yous were mailed - we found out that the cancer was back. And, this time, it was not where it was supposed to be. The cancer had moved into his lungs and a couple lymph nodes. When cancer is not where it originated, you hear the dreaded "stage four." Metastasized.

This was an odd month for me. I was still clinging to the joy of the wedding and yet grieving at the same time. Writing my thank you letters became cathartic. I loved jotting down my favorite memories of the wedding to the guests, personalizing when possible, and telling everyone what a lovely time we had and what generosity we were shown. It was like living someone else's life.

I remember when my pictures were done. I dove into them for weeks. I was obsessed. It was so nice to look back on that day. A day when I was at peace, and in love, and so happy - and my dad did not have cancer.

Over Christmas, we had some added stress. The specifics, however, I am going to keep private. Let's just say - It was bad. We needed relief. It was the hardest couple months of my life. To date. I remember thinking back to when we lost our sweet Ky Ky. I really did think that would be my defining "bad thing" that happened to me. I figured we all had a story, and our stories would inevitably have some bad parts, and that maybe that was mine. That was the thing that would make my family stronger and then everything else would be daisies and roses - because we deserved it, damn it!

Here we are - summer 2012 - and I can say I am feeling relief. You never know how strong you are, until being strong is the only choice. Dad is on his second medication, and he is doing well. I was very concerned about his quality of life while being treated, and I am happy to say that he is golfing and laughing and working and being an awesome dad... doing pretty much everything he normally would do. He is also not symptomatic from the cancer. So, he is sick... but, he doesn't feel sick.

And, just for good measure, I just want to say that he is the best dad, the best friend, the best role model. Anyone would tell you so. He is a great man. So much of all the good stuff in me is because of him.

So, that's where I have been. I've been focusing on my family and counting my blessings. If I am not writing on here, it's because I am off living my life, with my awesome family and friends, trying not to sweat the small stuff - because the big stuff sucks.

pb&j

Checked a couple big ones off my 101 in 1,001 list over the last couples weeks.
The biggest? I got married! Here are some early favorite pics... in no particular order.

balance.

One thing I am really excited about is being done with the big EVENT and just being married. I have big plans for a better routine, a more organized life --> balance. While I have enjoyed planning my wedding, there has been this constant THING (I don't want to say burden) on my shoulders. It is not a burden, because my wedding is something I am excited about... but, its like I can't truly relax, because there is always something I could be doing for it. Now that we're down to the last month, I feel like I can finally look forward to --> life past the wedding.

In addition to the wedding, work was crazy this summer. I didn't do just my job, I did a couple more... and it brought me down, and it made me bitter. Some of that has been resolved, some of it still stands - but, I am learning to blame less and do what I can each day. And be okay with it.

I want to set some short term goals for myself for post-wedding Paige - fewer than my 101 in 1,001:

  • New routine. Even though I have been running around busy for months, I also have been more lazy than ever - because every time I have a free minute, I want to sit and zone out from the mental workout of the day. I can't wait to be back to my normal, day-to-day life duties, and make room for getting up earlier, taking walks again, and getting to sleep at a normal time. Maybe I will wake up with the alarm instead of my usual scramble?

  • Grocery shopping. Wow, I really messed up on this. Like I said above, the mental roller coaster would wear me out so bad each day that I wouldn't feel up for planning my grocery store visits. So, I would quickly pick up the essentials and food for a couple meals, and then we would be wondering what to eat three days later... I need to get back to my meal planning and accountability to the plan. We were happier and healthier when I took the time to do this. Plus! When I cook, John cleans up.

  • Time for friends. In some ways I have really checked out. I can't wait to put them first for a while.

  • Time for family. Ditto.

  • Cleaning. (see Grocery shopping.) Yeah, it's clean... enough. But, it's really messy. And those gifts? They are awesome, but I haven't had the strength to clean up and move out the old stuff.

Wish me the best. Hopefully I will be reporting to you in October that my life has slowed down and I am meeting these goals.

elevators, powerlines and trees - oh my!

What a day it was yesterday. First we go to our final meeting & menu tasting at the Aladdin and get stuck in an elevator for 25 minutes... John was shaking, the event coordinator was sitting on the floor with her knees to her chest, and the chef was playing on his iphone, and I stood nervously laughing in the corner! It was a bonding moment, and it will surely make working with them even more fun now that we have this great story. The best part was that when they finally got us out, it was like the movies... we were between floors and had to crouch down and jump!

THEN, we watched our neighborhood fall apart when the storm rolled through later in the evening. I thought the whole city must be sitting in wreckage this morning... only to find out from the news that our exact location got it the worst. If you go to KMBC.com, all the pictures are from 63rd and Roe - I live at 63rd and Roe - ha!

It was pretty thrilling though... transformer throwing fire in the street, trees breaking before our eyes, running around with flashlights. The carnage left behind last night was amazing. I had never seen anything like it. Pretty much everyone on my block had a tree on their car, or a tree on their house.

We were thankful to find no serious damage to our home or cars... only the power line laying in the street next to our driveway. I wish this picture was better - you can see the road blocks next to our driveway... but, you can't see the power line laying in the street and across our backyard. Have you ever seen a bulldozer come down your street? Well, now I have. Now, we just wait on KCP&L and pray for electricty.

countdown to the party

In case you wanted to know... I am finally checking off the final items on my wedding planning timeline! It feels like such a relief to see what is left on the list and know that something has been done for each item. Finally time to countdown to the party! Still left... I need to find earrings. I need to buy gifts... finalize menu and music...

getting there...

Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who contacted me about rehearsal dinner ideas. I was able to finally book a room at the Bristol, which I love.

I might have been losing it last week... okay, truth - I did kinda lose it. A couple lucky people got that phone call... haha. I was just feeling so overwhelmed. This summer has been a great challenge for me. I have been doing extra tasks at work and feeling responsible for a lot that is going on... and John has been job hunting, and I am planning this wedding.... but, this weekend and today I am feeling great comfort. Things are getting done and good changes for my life are right around the corner.

John was lucky enough to be offered a new job on Friday, and we're very excited for the change.

And... 75 days until the wedding!

S.O.S.

Hey there, bloggy friends! I am helping the future mother-in-law with the Rehearsal Dinner for our wedding. I have been frantically google searching for a nice venue to hold the dinner... unfortunately, all of the places have written or called back are already booked. Many can still cater somewhere, but where would that be? I have a couple who haven't answered yet, but I thought I would ask for help - Any ideas? Have you been to a great private dining room in KC? Have a great idea of a place to cater to?

I have already tried Webster House, Californos, Fiorellas... and waiting to hear back from Pierponts, Plaza III and Classic Cup... The church is in PV and the hotel is downtown, so I am looking for something in the area.

Can't let the soon to be mother-in-law down, help a girl out!

customer service fail

I spend a portion of my days answering phones at work. I answer all kinds of crazy questions, sometimes ones that do not even pertain to our organization. I try to be helpful, and I try to be nice. I answer questions I have answered a million times, as patiently as I can, knowing they don't know the answer. But... I have noticed that every vendor I hire for the wedding seems to be unavailable or disinterested in communication the moment a check is written.

Many of my married friends told me that no matter how cool something is, the person you work with matters just as much as whatver you are buying - that you should like the person, because you'll have to work with them on a regular basis up until the wedding, so I thought I took that advice very seriously... and they still aren't awesome. It annoys me because I spend my days giving good customer service to clueless people, and then I go make a call with questions of my own, I can't get the same in return.

Listen - we all don't like answering the same questions over and over, year after year... but, you should be nice - and return phone calls - and emails... no matter how stupid my question, because I am paying you - and a person should be mortified about two months going by without responding to my emails or calls - MORTIFIED.

engagement pics versus rain

Today - engagement pictures at four.
Today - rain forecasted all day.

I spent the first couple hours of my morning sitting in a waiting room while I got four new tires put on the car... great fun, you know. Unfortunately, the news was on the entire time.... the news? Rain, rain, rain. I tried to ignore the forecast, but it was obvious we might be re-scheduling. I almost finished my book (Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls - SOO good!), but all I could think about was how annoyed I was at the weather.

Then I went home, paced around a while, headed to the salon to get my hair done... and returned home to continue pacing (and calling my mom every hour to whine).

Well, long story short, the rain HELD OFF (winning!), and we got to have our pictures taken. My sister came to be in charge of Raleigh... and she was my personal stylist... popping in and out with a comb and snapping a lot of pictures herself. Here is a sneak peek from my personal camera - Thanks, Ali!

moving right along...

dress - check
bridesmaid dresses - check
church - check
reception venue - check
DJ - check
photographer - check
guest list - kinda checking that one off...
florist - scheduled

Friday I pick out a cake and Monday are our engagement photos... things are moving right along. I have actually begun making decisions! I was very decisive in the beginning, then I went through a couple months where I couldn't decide on one thing... and now I am back in planning mode. I literally worked on the wedding for 8 hours on Friday!

I have had many reminders in the last couple weeks to slow down and enjoy this. Things happening for a reason, angels watching over us, etc.

goin' to the cheap chapel

Well, this has not been my most productive holiday break yet... but, I am trying! While my house might be in shambles... I do feel like I have gotten quite a bit done for the wedding.

This month, we chose our wedding reception site, church and hired a DJ. Then, I decided to take a mental break from wedding planning over the holidays.... but, tonight I got excited again! My friend Ruth suggested I create a vision board so I can always "look" at what I am planning - great idea. I am cutting and pasting into a notebook, but I already am enjoying "seeing" my wedding. I just need to keep putting feelers out for affordable venders, DIY projects and areas I can cut costs.... like, do I have to have boutonnieres? do people really love favors? I think people might like more food at the reception than chapstick with my picture and wedding date printed on it. Can't I just wear flip flops? :) And don't get me started on the cost of having your wedding in a church....

Dear God, don't let me become some wedding-centered bride-zombie. Thanks, paige.
