We inherited a piano!

I took the day off and babysat my favorite nephew.

Raleigh and Henry had fun together.

 

I volunteered at Operation Breakthrough.

I went to an awesome event to raise money for the
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce called Comida KC.
It was like being on an episode of Top Chef.

 

I got to meet Aaron Sanchez and eat his food!

 

It snowed on May 2nd. For realz.

 

Jenni turned 30. I currently have one week to go...

snow joke!

Well, the snow came as furiously as my bff Gary predicted, and I watched more snow fall than I can remember. A couple years ago we had two bad winters, back to back, but that was mostly because it snowed often and kept piling up. This was crazy. It was clear at 6am, and then I was measuring 11 inches by noon. Raleigh was loving the snow in the morning and then needed me to dig a path for her by lunch. Now, we are preparing for another round! Cheers to this crazy winter. I love this picture because you can see how deep it was on the driveway. I moved a crap ton of snow that day.

On another note, I got pretty upset last Thursday when I kept hearing newscasters saying the same thing over and over, "If you don't have the right car, stay home" - "If you aren't in an emergency, stay home" - "If you don't need to be on the roads, stay home." Well, duh. Don't they realize we're in a recession? These people aren't out on the roads for fun - they were trying to get to work, under an employer that cares more about a bottom line than their safety.

Thousands of motorists were trying to keep their jobs. If they weren't required to go in, I am sure they would have rather been home, snuggled and safe, with their families. John's job offered pizza as a condolence... and then they ran out while John was in line. wah wah. Hopefully they are more understanding tonight and tomorrow. We'll see. Stay safe, everyone!

Snow.My.God.

We are prepping for a big storm, and there is very little anyone is talking about other than the impending snow and ice. My office has already announced that it will be closed tomorrow, so I am ready to snuggle in and stay off the roads. I wish John had the same option. Oh well.

For your snow day enjoyment - This makes me cry every time.

 

 They kept showing this commercial during the Westminster dog show last week...and it got me every time. My favorite part of watching was that the announcer kept saying, "the real best in show is the one sitting next to you on the couch." True.

Tonight turned out to be quite eventful! John and I were sitting on our front porch tonight when we heard a loud noise... we both looked up, but saw nothing. Moments later, we heard a car moving loudly down the street - looking more closely, we noticed the car was dragging something that was sparking more and more as it drove down the block.

John decides it is their muffler dragging, but I kept telling him that anyone would hear that and would stop. The car makes a turn and then the sound starts getting louder again as they were clearly driving down the street parallel to ours, in our direction. Then, there is a loud bang and it is clear the car has stopped... this is when it gets good. A bunch of neighbors come out of their houses and it turns out a girl's car a couple doors down has been hit badly - we know this because she goes out to check her car for damage and screams "my tires!!!" at the top of her lungs.

Well, now we are interested. So, we put Raleigh on her leash and walk to Brandon's house to see what he and Nate saw/heard... and to see if we should walk over and investigate :)

A cop pulls up as we are chatting on their driveway and I tell him that I believe the car that fled the scene should be directly behind Brandon's house.

We decided we shouldn't leave it up to the cops to figure out this crime... so we began our hunt.... following the marks the car left on the street as it fled. Nate stuck his finger in the fluid left on the street, tasted it, and decided it was brake fluid. We dubbed Raleigh "McGruff the Crime Dog" and followed the trail to a bunch of cops and a very badly damaged mini van parked in the driveway of the house that backs up to Brandon's house - I am a genius! The cops should have stopped and given me a medal of honor or something! Fairway Citizen of the Year!

It was not her muffler. She hit the car on our block, busted her front tire and drove on the rims all the way home.... leaving a white mark on the road from the car she hit straight to her driveway. Brilliant lady. Brandon wished she had run from the cops, noting that the Fairway police probably need some excitement in their lives, but it appeared she was cooperating during her sobriety test.

Best quote of the night - "I hope you have my back if I take a stray bullet." (brandon)

My sweet baby girl is turning 2 today!

She is cuddly, smart and loving - and I am happy to be her mama.

good riddance, snow

On Christmas Eve, when the blizzard began, I was excited about the drama of the storm. There were moments when each snow storm began that it was a beautiful site. There were days when the streets were perfectly clean. But, after 17 days of snow... I am OVER IT. Yup, that's right. The snow and this wicked winter can go back to where they came from.

We have shared some good moments, but good riddance.

Outside of Kites today, during half-time, I overheard a group of guys talking about how funny it was that a day of sunshine and 20 degree temps felt so good... and, I agreed. Absurd.

White Christmas and a Snowy New Year

Never again will I ask for a white Christmas. The anticipation of blizzard conditions was pretty fun... but, the result created a tense atmosphere for the entire Christmas celebration. Each time a family member left my grandparent's house or was on their way over, we all felt anxious until we knew they were safe. I also was snowed in to their house for a couple days and was overwhelmed with the idea of being away from home and wondering when I could get back. And... if the "getting" back would be safe.

Luckily all of us survived the snow. But, the added stress really took something away from the magic of the holiday.

I have been getting some much needed exercise taking care of my drive way, over and over, as the snow continued throughout the week; however, the additional exercise has only helped balance out the crazy amount of food I have eaten in the last week - so, no weight loss. Before the holidays, I was four pounds down and anticipating my five pounds lost announcement... alas, the announcement will come later.

I also crossed a couple things off of my list! I finally printed my 2008 scrapbook off of Snapfish and am quickly completing the 2009 book while the memories are still fresh. Also, I threw a party at my house! Five down, 96 to go... oh my.
