Tonight I watched Julie and Julia for the first time - thank you, Netflix! I really loved this movie. I am so drawn to Amy Adams - love her in just about any movie. (Have you ever seen Junebug? If you haven't, rent it. She was up for an Oscar!) Anyway... I thought the movie was really cute, and I think we can all relate to the funk she was in before her blog. I definitely have times in my life where I ask myself, "What the heck am I doing?!"
There was one part in particular that resonated with me, though... at one point her husband called her challenge and accompanying blog narcissistic. So I wondered throughout the rest of the movie if having a blog is such. But, isn't all social media narcissistic? All of us parading our lives and expecting interest? But, the truth is... I read blogs. I read Facebook. I truly DO care what you ate for dinner, or what cute thing your kid said, or what you looked like in your wedding dress. I think it is fascinating to see clips of other's lives. I learn from it, I laugh at it, I feel a part of it.
And, I find some of my own sharing to be therapeutic. Think about life before Facebook and Blogs where you just kept all your thoughts bottled up or shared them with a friend directly. This way, we all can be heard, and we can move on with our days. Sometimes that is all people want - to be heard. And, whether it is a status update about how crappy the weather is or that your boss was mean to you, I think people do feel better sometimes just putting it out there in the universe.
Although we are a narcissistic world, we are also open and transparent and vulnerable. I am glad Julie Powell continued her blog... as will I.
When I printed out my blog (Blurb), I dedicated to me. Because I realized that even though I wrote stuff down for my family and friends when I moved but it turned out to be one of the best things I did for myself!
ReplyDeleteWell put. This week I decided that I blog for me. You know, I love to share about my life and it has been theraputic. But at the same time, it's difficult because I know who reads it so I can't gripe about my inlaws or family (which sometimes I need to do!). I to love reading about what's going on in people's lives. Everyday, sometimes multiple times a day, I log on to blogger to see if someone has updated their blog. I love life! I loved Julie & Julie too, it was thought provoking and it made me want to cook (hence the Tomato Bisque posted yesterday)!
ReplyDeleteI started a blog, mostly to give me something else to do to waste time! Plus, I realized the other day that I'm at a really important point in my life, so it might be nice later to look back at what I was thinking about.
