S&TC 2 - Thumbs Down

Sex and The City 2 was a total disappointment to me. In the show and the last movie, the part that spoke to me the most was the relationships - the ups and downs of life, the celebrations, the grieving, etc. Although I found the beginning of the movie (specifically, Liza) fabulous, I was really let down by the cultural insensitivity. The movie ignorantly and inaccurately illustrates Abu Dhabi as an oppressive land full of men who cannot handle bare shoulders and live to belittle women - and of women who like it when their lifestyle is mocked.

When I first saw that they were filming in Morocco, I was excited that women around the world were going to be turned on to Middle East travel. After my fantastic trip to Egypt in 2008, I was a changed person in many ways, and I looked forward to the cast and crew showing off the beauty of this part of the world.

At PTPI, we are working to build bridges and cultivate cultural understanding. It's not just my job, it is who I am. This movie laughs in the face of this kind of work. No wonder the UAE didn't want the movie filmed there.

The dialogue was forced, the outfits were ridiculous and their lifestyles, for the first time, felt very unrealistic.

  1. I was really upset about Charlotte's "plight" as a mother. Really. She has a full time nanny! I also thought it was insensitive towards the Middle East. Finally, I was annoyed that Stanley said Anthony could cheat. A sour detail to put in an otherwise fabulous wedding. Please no more SATC movies.
